 Oklawaha Greenway Song and Video

The Friends of the Oklawaha Greenway present a video recording of their new theme song, Oklawaha, with lyrics by Chuck Breckheimer, and inspired by the song, Oklahoma, from the Broadway musical of the same name.

A video recording of the newly formed Oklawaha Singers performing the song can be found on YouTube; click the image to see the video. The Friends wish to extend a special thanks to film-maker Henry Felt for his video recording. to see the lyrics.

The Singers are community volunteers (from left to right): David Sotar Hoffman, Tom Fisch, Chris Berg, Martha Huggins, Laura Micklowitz, and Katie Breckheimer.

Hendersonville’s 3.5 mile Oklawaha Greenway winds through wetlands, meadows and forests to connect four parks. It takes its name from a Cherokee word meaning “slow moving muddy waters” because much of the Greenway runs along Mud Creek.

OKLAWAHA

KEY: C sharp

(Women) There’s never been a better place to bike and hike
It’s mostly level with one big swale
(Men) Goin’ outdoors is what we like
(ALL) Yes we’re livin’ near a greenway trail
Greenway trail—gonna treat you swellllllllllllll.

(Women) Gonna bring blossoms for the pollinators
Open land for deer/ and other vegatators
(Men) Grasses by the trail where honeybees zoom
Plenty of air and plenty of room
(ALL) Plenty of room both north and south
(Zotar) Plenty of sun and plenty of growth (all one note)

musical interlude

OOOOklawaha,
where the wind comes sweepin’ from the south
And that old joe pye can sure grow high
Just as long as we don’t have a drought
OOOOklawaha, every day my sweetie pie and I
Sit beside the creek and hear it speak
As the muddy water ripples by

We know we belong to the land
And the land we belong to is grand
So when we say
Yeow! aye yip aye yo ee ay
We’re only sayin’
We’re doin’ fine Oklawaha, Oklawaha, NC !

Longer musical interlude

OOOOklawaha,
Where the storms come creepin’ down the lane
(Oklawaha!)
And the mud on your feet can sure get deep
When a flood comes right behind the rain
OOOOkalwaha, where the birds come join us as we walk
(Oklawaha!)

With their tweet-tweet-tweet, it sure sounds sweet
And we hear the bullfrog’s croakin’ talk.

We know we belong to the land
And the land we belong to is grand
So when we say
Yeow! aye yip aye yo ee ay!
We’re only sayin’
We’re doing fine Oklawaha,
Oklawaha, NC.
Okla-waha, okla-waha, okla-waha
Okla-waha, okla-waha

We know we belong to the land
And the land we belong to is grand
So when we say
Yeow! aye yip aye yo ee ay!
We’re only sayin’
We’re doing fine Oklawaha,
Oklawaha OK-L-A-W-A-H-A
Oklawaha!
HURRAY!
